A one-day national workshop on Introduction to Bioinformatics for undergraduate students was organised by the PG department of Bioinformatics & IT. It was on August 17 at AIMIT, St Aloysius College (Deemed to be University), Mangalore. A total number of 95 undergraduate students from various colleges from Kasargod and Mangalore, attended the workshop.
Dr (Fr) Melwyn Pinto SJ – Director AIMIT, resource person Lanwin Lobo, Director MResult Pvt Ltd Mangalore, Dr Hemanlatha Nm Dean, IT, Anushree Raj, staff coordinator, were present.
In his inaugural address, Fr Pinto gave a brief annotation on the current demand and necessity for bioinformaticians in India and abroad. He emphasised how the combination of life science and computational science can be a boon to mankind. He called upon the participants to be passionate towards whatever path they choose for their future.
The workshop consisted of three sessions. Mr Lanwin Lobo was the resource person for the first session. He gave a deep insight on what is bioinformatics and elaborated the significance of learning bioinformatics. He encouraged the participants giving his own example on how he could transform his passion in programming being a bioinformatics graduate.
Anushree Raj was the resource person for the second session on bioinformatics application, scope, and career. She highlighted the impact of bioinformatics in various fields of life sciences and how each field could adopt bioinformatics for its advancement. She also gave a clear idea of the job opportunities and career path available for bioinformatic graduates.
The afternoon session was a hands-on session by Dr Hemalatha N and alumnus Shradha. The hands-on session gave an exposure to various tools like BLAST used in bioinformatics and also the usage of NCBI databases for various purposes.
The workshop was concluded with a thank you note by Ms Prathishta.
