AIMIT celebrated Onam, the cultural festival of Kerala, on September 3. Over two hundred and fifty students of Kerala who are studying in the I year at AIMIT took lead in celebrating the festival.
Dr (Fr) Melwyn Pinto SJ, Director, inaugurated the programme by playing the drums. In his inaugural speech, he said, “Onam is a special feast for the Keralaites as it brings everyone together. I wish and pray that this communal harmony might grow because of this celebration.” He called upon students to understand each other, be with each other and then experience the joy of different communities.
In her message, Dr Hemalatha N. Dean (Academics, IT), spoke about the efforts the students have put together to make this celebration a success. “The Onam festival is celebrated to honour King Mahabali who is believed to be visiting Kerala at the time of Onam. We must all take part in this Onam celebration with love and harmony,”she said.
Dr Swapna Rose from MBA department said, “Onam is all about joy and happiness and togetherness. This festival brings a lot of togetherness and harmony.” She appreciated the students for the beautiful flower carpets (Pookalam) they had made.
Students danced to the tune of the drum beats. Games such as tug of war were conducted. Traditional sweet payasam was distributed to all.
